Flag of the Day
The War of 1812 began on this day in 1812. To commemorates this event, we are flying “The Star-Spangled Banner” – 15 star, 15 stripe.
The War of 1812
The War of 1812 was a conflict fought between the United States, the United Kingdom, and their respective allies from 1812 to 1815. Historians in Britain often see it as a minor part of the Napoleonic Wars, but in the United States and Canada, we see it as a war in its own right.
Flag Acts
America’s first Flag Act created the original United States flag of thirteen stars and thirteen stripes. The Star-Spangled Banner with its fifteen stars and fifteen stripes came as the result of the second Flag Act which was approved on January 13, 1794. The additional stars and stripes represent Vermont (1791) and Kentucky (1792) joining the Union. The flag wouldn’t go through another change until the third Flag Act – 1818.
