Museum of Western Reserve Farms & Equipment

Most of us spend too much time on the last twenty-four hours and too little on the last six thousand years. ~ Will Durant

History is Alive In Richfield, Oh

We discovered a hidden gem this past weekend during a routine drive through Richfield, Ohio. If not for a small orange pumpkin shaped sign at the side of the road we would still be wishing a place like this existed.

After a short drive down Southern Rd we came upon the Stone Garden Farm, home of the Museum of Western Reserve Farms & Equipment.  At first glance we wondered if we were at the right place.  An aged gravel drive lead up a small hill to the parking area. At the crest of the hill there was no mistake. There before us was an entire historic village of structures. A school house, postoffice, general store, slaughter hose and so many more.  Each rescued from destruction by Museum Curator Jim Fry.

This wonderful museum houses structures in various states of restoration, along with farm machines, tractors, organic gardens, and farm animals.

One of my favorite things about this museum is that it feels authentic. Unlike the manicured appearance of nearby Hale Farm, nothing at this museum is perfect and it’s easy to imagine you are looking at history the way its participants did.

More than Just a Museum

A visit to the museum is free, although a donation is greatly appreciated. In addition to the museum, the Stone Garden Farm offers homesteading classes, activities for homeschoolers, and a variety of special events throughout the year.

This is a working farm with traditional farm animals on display. Because of the layout of the farm it is easy to get close to dairy cows, goats, chickens and even rabbits.

We spent about an hour on the grounds, completing our visit with the purchase of a pumpkin from the general store. Stone Garden Farm and the museum are on our list of great family places, We’ll be heading back very soon.
